B and I spent an exciting weekend in Wiesbaden for his hockey tournament. Between the tournament though, I was able to get in some Christmas market time. I had never been to Wiesbaden and I was pretty impressed with how nice it was. It is located in the Hessen state of Germany. Though it was a decent sized city, it was pretty clean and had nice residential areas. The Christmas Market is located near the Wiesbaden Cathedral (Marktkirche), which is a huge red, neo-gothic church. It's really stunning!
They have a little outdoor icerink for kids and adults to ice skate on, a block away. The market itself is a decent sized one. A little crowded I might add. They have a lot of handmade items for sale and of course baked goods! You can enjoy treats like bratwurst on brotchen or semmel (a roll), crepes, potato pancakes, gluwein of course, and a variety of candies. There is also an area for kids to go on rides. Wiesbaden also has a lot of good shopping in town, albeit rather expensive, but they have nice stores. This Christmas market isn't so different from most in Germany, but Wiesbaden is overall a pretty town. I got my final Christmas shopping done here too!

ReplyDeleteI am drooling over the gingerbread! How are the prices of ornaments and presents at the Christmas markets?
ReplyDeleteThey aren't super expensive unless they are intricately carved wooden gifts. Those can be pretty expensive. Otherwise everything is pretty affordable.

ReplyDeleteI know right!
DeleteMy ancestors are all from Germany and I have never been there . I even know people who live in Germany and one daughter went to law school there
ReplyDeleteI know the Christmas baking is always very pretty and good tasting. We have a German store in the city where I live and I always buy the baking goods like gingerbread cookies and molten cakes
Awesome! Yes the baked goods in Germany are great. They tend to be less sweet than American treats, but that's not a bad thing.

ReplyDeleteYes I've had them before, I actually bought one of the zebra striped ones. They are filled with marshmallow fluff with a a waffle for a base and chocolate on top! Yummy, but you definitely can't eat the whole thing in one sitting.
DeleteMy dream has always been to spend the holidays in Germany with my family. Shopping the markets....and everyone buying only craft made gifts from the Holiday markets. Decorating our hotel room with make shift décor... just seems like it would be a dream.
