The most Bavarian of towns (maybe besides Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber) in my mind is Garmisch-Parkenkirchen. When B told me he had another hockey tournament but this time in Garmisch, I was excited to accompany him. I mean, this is a huge destination for skiers and there is so much to do in the area, like visit the famous Neschwanstein Castle (or maybe you prefer an aerial view). It's pretty much a winter wonderland. This time, between giving support to B, I had some more destinations that I wanted to visit while in town.
Our hotel was right downtown. There are several areas to visit but the neighborhood pictured, really encompassed the town for me. Imagine high alps all around you with beautiful chuches, elaborately painted homes and businesses (some even jutting out of cliffs), and many opporutinties for outdoor activities. It's like a fairytale town. Each building is a work of art. If you are in the area, here are some things that you can do besides marvel at the beauty:
10 Things to do in Garmisch and the Surrounding Area:
1) Go skiiing or snowboarding on the Zugspitz.
2) Go paragliding off of the Zugspitz. (This looks terrifying but I am considering it).
3) Have a spa day at one of the many hotels (If you are affiliated with the military there is a huge resort there).
4) Take a short trip to see the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles.
5) Visit the Monastary Ettal and see the brewery run by monks.
6) Photograph the entire area, it's beautiful!
7) In the summer go white water rafting.
8) Walk the Partnach Gorge (make sure you hike to the top of the mountain, it's worth it!)
9) Visit the Linderhof Palace in Obberamergau (next best thing to Versailles).
10) Make a day trip to nearby Munich or Dachau Concentration Camp.
This was my second time visiting Garmisch and I already have more things on that list to see. Stay tuned for my visit to the Partnach Gorge and I scored a really sweet vintage buy that I'm excited to share.
If you came to Garmisch, what would you want to do?

Brittany, this looks like such a fun place to explore! I love those wooden masks and all the beautiful designs on the buildings.

ReplyDeleteBavaria is definitely a great place to travel in Germany. You've got Regensburg, Nurnberg, Munich, Garmisch, and so many other great cities!
DeleteI love all the paintings on the buildings, looks like a great town to visit!
ReplyDeleteWhat fabulous artwork and buildings! I love the wonderful details everywhere! I think I would want to see the castles and visit the monks.
ReplyDeleteI would need almost a week to do all the things you listed. There's so much to do! I love the painted buildings. They look so charming.
ReplyDeleteYea, you'd need more than a few days to do all that. I plan to do all if not most of those things. I'll probably be back around spring or summer time.
DeleteBrittany, It's good to be back on your tour. I missed most of February because of ill family members. I love seeing your photos of the towns, churches, shops, statues . . . everything. Thanks for letting me sip my hot tea and enjoy the ride. I saw your link at From My Front Porch To Yours link party. Ann Marie @ Iris Abbey
ReplyDeleteWhat nice things to say! Thanks for following along. I just followed your through bloglovin so I can keep up with your estate finds! Can't wait to see what you find next!
DeleteIf I visited Garmisch, I'd want to photograph the area. I love the buildings and the scenery in your photos. I think a visit to Linderhof Palace would also be on the agenda.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to go to the Linerhof Palace on this recent visit but we didn't have enough time, plus I want to see the gardens in the summer so I will probably see it then. Unfortunately I know you can't take pictures inside so I'll have to see what I can do ;)
DeleteStopping by via the Monday Ante.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos! I was in Garmisch Patenkirchen last year, but it was raining so my photos didn't turn out as well. I did think it was a very pretty town though. You can read my post about it here if you want: http://confuzzledom.wordpress.com/2013/11/06/garmisch-patenkirchen/
When my hubby was stationed in Germany back in the late 80's, we took a trip through Garmisch-Parkenkirchen on our way back home from our Switzerland vacation. We visited the Zugspitz, Neuschwanstein Castle (and the one across the way from it) as well as Dachau Concentration Camp. We lived there for two years and I loved every moment we were there. I so envy you! Have you had a chance to go to Crystal country somewhere in N. Bavaria (I can't remember the name of the town)? If you do go there, please post your pictures. Chus <--is that the way it's spelled? Bev :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures, you make me really want to visit this area. I'd certainly be out there photographing everything, I always take squillions of photos!! Linking up through #TravelTuesday
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Phoebe!
DeleteThese photos are beautiful! You make me want to go exploring here. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks and Thanks for visiting!
DeleteWhat a beautiful town. I love all the colours!
ReplyDeleteStopping by to say hello from Travel Tuesday. Have a good week!
How beautiful! One of my greatest travel disappointments happened in the winter of 2009/2010 when I flew to London, spent a few days there and then go stuck in the city due to a deep freeze + snow storm that left the airports closed and the trains/ferries out of service. We never made it to Bavaria and missed the whole German leg of our trip and had to fly straight to Venice to get back on track with our tight itinerary. I still dream of seeing Neschwanstein Castle and wandering these scenic towns with my camera :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely Bavarian town.. It reminds me of my visit to Switzerland.. I love the cute buildings and paintings. And the mountains are beautiful. Lovely post and photos.
ReplyDeleteWow, Brittany Ruth, what a wonderful tour you gave us. I just love the brightly colored buildings, so storybook! I also read your Gorge article, it reminds me of some places I've seen around Tennessee in the US. Thank you for sharing this at my History & Home Link Party this week, take care - Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com
ReplyDeleteI should definitely head to Bavaria again once I'm back in Germany! I haven't been in years, but I remember it being really, really beautiful! :) And ever since I got into hiking, I've been wanting to hike up the Zugspitze, so a trip to Garmisch is definitely in order! :) Thanks for sharing these photographs with us - they're stunning!
ReplyDeleteThis is a storybook town! How wonderful to get to visit!
ReplyDeleteWow! It is gorgeous there, all of that colour! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is like a 'home' post for me since we spent a lot of time there. I've done almost everything on your list minus the paragliding, though my father did that and I remember watching him in awe. Love all the photographs! I hope to get my husband and sons there too soon. s
ReplyDeleteYes you have to take them there. I haven't done everything on the list yet but I plan to. OMG The paragliding looks terrifying especially when you see that they are on the tippy top of the mountain!
DeleteWe toured a lot of cities in Germany but this wasn't one of them. Don't you just love Germany? I love all the buildings and your pictures are great. I posted about Rothenberg and I loved it there....Christine
ReplyDeleteI hope I'm not pointing this out if you already know, but you mentioned Versailles -- have you thought about going to Herrenchiemsee? It's one of Ludwig's palaces on the island at Chiemsee, and it's a sort of tribute to/sort-of-replica of Versailles. It's so weird though because it's unfinished in a lot of rooms -- the wikipedia page says "only the central portion was built before the king died and construction was discontinued with 50 of the 70 rooms still incomplete." Crazy, right? I was only 15 when I went, it was our first big day trip in Germany, so my main memory was of culture shock and not realizing a "schinken" sandwich was ham and not chicken. But it has beautiful old trees, the island is nice, it has the hall of mirrors, and the ferry ride is fun too. (Bonus tiny tourist train that can take you the mile from the Prien train station down to the lake!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip! I had not heard of the Herrenchiemsee palace! I'll have to look into that. I've heard good things about Chiemsee but have never been there.
